southern and eastern Africa. In WWII it include a RNAS at Wingfield(later
Malagas) and Wynberg. SimonstownDockyard was handed over in 1957

Rosyth Naval Base. Originally called Lochinvar

|
Central Draftingat Haslemere. This was the place that drafted sailors
worldwide.. The work was transferred to Gosport in 1970.

RN Barracks at Devonport, originally called HMS Vivid (although
this name lives on at Mount Wise, Plymouth), renamed HMS Drake.

Portsmouth Naval Barracks.. The Barracks opened in 1903, when the
Flag CinC Portsmouth moved from HMS Excellent to HMS Victory(ship) then
to shore. The Barracks were then called HMS Victory but was renamed HMS
Nelson(1.8.1974).. Nelson carried the Flag of CinC Home Command

Faslane Naval Base. Nuclear submarine base in Gareloch, Scotland.

Portland Naval Base. Originally an Anti Submarine Training Establishment.Known
to sailors throughout the RN as the place where their ships ‘worked-up’
to a state of readiness.

HMS Pembroke
|
Chatham Naval Barracks, and home of the Coast Guard Service.

HMS President
|
Originally HMS Saxifrage, renamed HMS President . Sold for preservation
1987 and still on the Thames today. HMS President is the accounting vessel
for Admiralty based personnel. Personnel based at Admiralty were accommodated
in Furse House, Queens Gate Terrace, South Kensington. From 21.4.1958 to
1976.

|
Aden Naval Base.. Fleet Air Arm used RAF Khormaksar, but accounted
for by HMS Sheba.

Hong Kong Naval Base.

Northwood. Fleet Headquarters. Name assumed 30.4.1963. Became Joint

HMS Collingwood
|
Opened as a Training Establishment for RN Special Reservists, became
TEfor Radar and Electrical Ratings when Electrical Branch formed 1.4.1946.
BecameRN Weapon Engineering School when Branch changed its name in 1960’s

HMS Dartmouth
|
Officers training school. Used to be known as HMS Britannia , but
renamed in 1953 to release name for Royal Yacht. Renamed Britannia Royal
Naval College. Training was originally carried out on various ships until
1905 when it moved ashore and building of the current college began.

HMS Dolphin
|
Originally occupied by Royal Engineers, became submarine base and
school. School transferred to Raleigh in 1997.`

HMS Dryad
|
Navigation and Direction School. Originally based in Portsmouth
Dockyard
using a gunboat called Dryad as a tender, it moved to its present location
at Southwick Park .

HMS Excellent
|
Royal Naval Gunnery School. Now a part of HMS Nelson

HMS Fisgard
|
Oct 1940 Artificer training moved from Chatham to RN Training Establishment,
Torpoint.

Boys Training Establishment. Commissioning was on shore base at
Shotley although Ganges had a chequered history before this through a variety
of ships.. Boys training was transferred 1940 to HMS St George, and hostilities
only New Entries taken. at HMS Ganges. Re-opened July 1945.

RN Signal School. Originally carried out in Portsmouth Barracks.
Soberton Towers, the Wrens Communication Training Establishment was opened
in November 1943.

If anyone wishes to know more about Shore Bases, there is an excellent
book by Lt Cdr Warlow, RN called "Shore Establishments of the Royal Navy"
printed by Maritime Books whose address is Lodge Hill, Liskeard, Cornwall
(tel: 01579 343663).ISBN0-907771-74-2. This book describes the History
of these bases, and tells us that there were in the region of 417 bases
around the world from 1960 onwards, and 97 were still existing in 1997.
An impressive book listing upwards of 1,000 naval bases around the world.
