The T2 tankers were built to a standard design by four U.S. shipyards during
the war years. Their specifications were 10,448 gross tons, overall length
523.5ft, beam 68ft and turbo electric engined giving a speed of 14½
knots. Of the 481 ships built, 244 were allocated to U.S. owners after the
war, 203 sold to foreign buyers, 16 became U.S. Navy tankers and the remaining
18 were lost or scrapped during the war.
In the 1950s, many of these ships were lengthened or jumboised and a large
number became bulk cargo carriers, chemical carriers, container ships, vehicle
carriers, liquified gas carriers or Great Lakers.
