SHIPS' OFFICIAL NUMBERS
Official Numbers were held by British and Empire registered ships
regardless of name changes until or unless sold to foreign registry.
If later re-registered as British, the former number was normally reallocated.
These pages are purely a finding aid to identifying ships where only
the Official Number is known. It is far from a complete listing but
is fairly comprehensive for British ships over 300 g.t. built between
1876 and 1947. The names given are the names under which the ship was
built and it may not have held that number at this time, but nevertheless
is helpful in identifying the ship. Further information on most vessels
and subsequent names, fates, etc can be obtained by sending an e-mail
to Mariners-request@rootsweb.com with the one word SUBSCRIBE in the
body of the message. This will enable enquirers to subsequently post
a query to the Mariners List.
Any additions or corrections to the listings will be gratefully received
