Researching Mariners in Norwegian Archives

 SEAMEN'S RECORDS

Our register of seamen from the Government Directorate for Seamen is the first central register of seamen in Norway.

In Norway, the seamen mustered on/off at the local seamens' offices. They were closed down in 1988, and they sent their records to the National State Archives. There are eight Regional State Archives in Norway.

Therefore, in order to find a seaman before the war, you need to know where he was domiciled at that time.

Post WWll Records, & Norwegian Shipping and Trade Mission

This office holds a register of seamens' service on Norwegian ships covering the years 1949-1988 and from 1940-1945 on ships that were managed by the Norwegian Shipping and Trade Mission in London.

We have registration cards for each seaman, containing name, date and place of birth, position, nationality, domicile, marital status, sex, ship's name, date and place of signing on and signing off.

We also have wage acounts from the ships, so if we do not know the name of the ship and in what year the seaman served aboard, we may find him through these lists.

Our address is - Riksarkivet (National Archives of Norway), Postboks 4013 Ulleval Stadion, N-0806 Oslo, Norway.
Telefax 22 23 74 89.
e-mail - riksarkivet@riksarkivaren.dep.no

For records of Norwegian seamen after 1989, contact - Maritimt A/A-Register, Postboks 423, N-8601 MO, Norway.

There isn't any central register in Norway, but some access are available.

The major problem is that our merchant marine was sailing with both sides ("Nortraship" on Allied side, and "Hjemmeflaaten" (Home fleet) on the axis side). At Riksarkivet ( Norwegian Public Record Office) there are registers about all personnel serving during W.W.II. Unfortunately their
registers are not easy accessible (only manual), and enquiries must be sent by mail (they have an email address, but not worth any trust). Their address is: Riksarkivet, Post-box 4013, Ullevaal Stadion, N-0806 Oslo.

At the Norwegian maritime Museum they have a database covering all losses within the Nortraship, including all names of seamen involved. This includes non Norwegians as well (both survivors and casualties). I don't have their email address, but the mail address is: Norsk sjöfartsmuseum, Bygdöynesveien 37, N-0268 Oslo. (fax +47-22 56 20 37). Both of them read / answer in English.

Norwegians serving on foreign (British, Panama, Dutch, German, etc.) vessels are very difficult to find any information about. Only those who perished are recorded. The same about the coastal pilots. Finally, There are four huge books covering all Norwegian (not collaborators) casualties, giving name, family data, circumstances and date. There are photographs of most of them. Those covers all branches, both military and civilian. Very good books, but only with Norwegian text, and very hard to find available copies.

Norwegians' Seamen's Church Death Registers

This site which explains exactly what is contained in these registers can be
viewed at:  http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/durban1-eng.htm

The actual records themselves are located online at:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/index-eng.htm

Once you get to this page, select the following:
1) under Digitalarkivet  (right side of screen), select "1900" (the 1900 census information)
2) under Source Category, select "church registers" (left side of screen)
3) then select "buried" (left side of screen)
4) then scroll down to very bottom of page, and under ABROAD, you will see the various Norwegian Seaman's Church death registers.

These show the death date, burial date, where buried, often the name of the ship, what the seaman's position was, etc.
