Subscription is FREE! Send a message to Mariners-L-request@rootsweb.com with the ONE word SUBSCRIBE in the body of the message. Any other words will cause your message not to be recognised. Just that one word.
The list welcomes discussions about merchant marine and naval ships and the men who made their lives at sea from the earliest recorded times to the present day.
PLEASE NOTE THAT WE CANNOT ACCEPT MESSAGES ABOUT PASSENGERS, IMMIGRATION, EMIGRATION AND NATURALISATION - those messages belong on our 'sister-list' TheShipsList , so please don't post them to Mariners!
We've kept our list of dos and don'ts as short as possible but we must have a few guidelines if we are all to get the most out of Mariners -
1. Messages for the list must be posted to Mariners-L@rootsweb.com
The address Mariners-L-request is for commands only (subscribe, unsubscribe)
2. Messages must be on topic! If your message does not concern ships, seamen or a very closely related subject then it is almost certainly off topic to Mariners and must not be posted. If you are unsure, do check with the Listowners first. If anyone else posts an off topic message, or posts an inappropriate message please do NOT join in - witty replies often seem extremely silly even to the writer, when they appear on the list.
3. NO MESSAGES ABOUT PASSENGERS PLEASE! These messages are OFF TOPIC to Mariners, we are here to discuss ships and their crew, not passengers. Messages about passengers, immigration and naturalisation may result in you being unsubscribed without warning! This applies to those who post a message, and to those who reply! If you have a message concerning passengers, please post it to TheShipsList .
4. NO Family History enquiries unless they concern ships or crew! NO surname lists, unless you are able clearly to state that these have a mariner connection. There are other mailing lists which are suitable for those enquiries - other mailing lists hosted by Rootsweb can be found at http://www.rootsweb.com/maillist/
5. Do not send personal messages to the List! It is always nice to say thank you if someone helps you, but please note that this should be sent privately NOT to the list. Pressing 'reply' will send the message to the original sender. Pressing 'reply all' will send your message to the original sender AND the list. Please send personal messages to the sender NOT the list! If you have something of interest to the whole list, please use the 'reply all' facility so that we can all share the information!
6. Please do not send messages about broken links, other technical problems, spam or virus warnings to the list! If you are experiencing any problems please send a private message to the listowners.
7. Please - NO FLAMES! That means NO rude remarks about any other subscriber and no unkind or sarcastic comments about someone who has posted a question or an answer which you disagree with.
8. Professional researchers, writers or others with services to sell are very welcome to join the list and we greatly value your support and your help. However, please note that the list must not be used UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES for advertising either covertly or overtly. Note that this includes any such references in signature files or tags attached to your messages. We welcome your help, but we have numerous researchers and writers on board - out of consideration to your colleagues who may be seen or unseen by you on the list, we must respectfully ask that you do not make reference to your own professional services or seek to gain by posting your telephone numbers/address or advice to visit your (commercial) home page. Likewise, we do not allow referrals to professional researchers by any other subscriber under any circumstances!
************************************************************
We have to keep very strictly to these
guidelines, they are very clear and they are here to benefit all of us. If
you break these basic rules you cause annoyance to our hundreds of other
subscribers who are here to discuss ships and mariners! On behalf of all
of them, we reserve the right immediately to UNSUBSCRIBE anyone who disregards
this without warning or further discussion.
May we suggest that you listen-in for a while until you feel happy about posting your own questions and comments to the list - if you have any problems write to Debbie at marine@netcomuk.co.uk or Ted at mariners-L@efinch90.fsnet.co.uk and we shall be pleased to help you.
