Andrew Rose
from "Farewell to the Days of Sail",
an LP by NZ (resident, but L'pool born) folksinger Mike Stanley (CityFolk
Records Hastings New zealand (CFR015)). According to the sleeve notes
the song is traditional, which I guess means nobody remembers who wrote
it. It says "Andrew died of his injuries. The master, mate
and bo'sun were tried for the murder in Liverpool. The master, Captain
Rodgers was found guilty and hung at "Joe Gurk's" (Walton Prison)."

Andrew Rose a British sailor
now to you his woes I'll name
it was on a passage from Barbadoes
while on board of the Martha Jane
CHORUS:
And wasn't that most cruel usage
without a friend to interpose
how they whipped and mangled, gagged
and strangled
the British sailor Andrew Rose
It was up aloft the Captain sent
him
naked beneath the burning sun
while the mate did follow after
whipping him till his blood did
run
And then they gave him stuff to
swallow
now stuff to you that I cannot
name
while the crew grew sick with horror
all aboard of the Martha Jane
And in the water cask they put him
and for seven long days they left
him there
and when poor Andrew begged for
mercy
our Captain said that none should
go near
Now for twenty days they did ill-use
him
till into Liverpool they arrived
and when the judge heard Andrew's
story-
"Oh Captain Roger you must die"
So come all you friends and near
relations
come all you friends to interpose
Oh never treat a British sailor
like they did young Andrew Rose.
